In a significant move to strengthen its leadership position in the Romanian hydroenergy sector, Hidroelectrica S.A., Romania’s largest producer of green energy, has finalized the sale of the UCM Resita S.A. business. The formal agreement was signed today at the company’s headquarters in Bucharest, marking the culmination of a transaction that underscores Hidroelectrica’s strategic focus on operational efficiency and technological advancement.
The contract confirms that all conditions stipulated by the parties have been met, including the payment of the purchase price of 67,879,000 lei by the buyer, Uzina de Constructii Masini Hidroenergetice S.R.L. (Hydro Equipment Manufacturing Plant Ltd.), a company wholly owned by Hidroelectrica S.A. itself. This move allows the company to consolidate its position in the energy equipment manufacturing and services market, further expanding its capabilities in hydroelectric equipment and auxiliary systems.
The transaction involves the acquisition of the entire business related to the manufacturing and commercialization of hydraulic units and auxiliary equipment, as well as the provision of services such as rehabilitation, specialized improvement, and technical assistance in the energy field. These services are connected to the ABC platform and partially to the Calnicel platform, assets that were historically held by UCM Resita S.A.
This deal marks a major step in Hidroelectrica’s plan to optimize its operational structure. By acquiring these assets, Hydro Equipment Manufacturing Plant Ltd. gains access to a comprehensive portfolio of active contracts, know-how, patents, and licenses necessary for the continued manufacturing, rehabilitation, and enhancement of hydro units and auxiliary equipment. This portfolio is unique in this part of Europe and is supported by the expertise of approximately 450 employees specialized in the production and maintenance of hydroelectric equipment.
Karoly Borbely, CEO of Hidroelectrica, highlighted the strategic importance of this milestone:
“The signing of this contract is an extremely important moment for Hidroelectrica and represents a strategic step not only for us but also for the Romanian hydroenergy industry. We are focused on what lies ahead—strengthening and capitalizing on this acquisition, integrating it with Hidroserv, and increasing the value of both assets. Our aim is to maximize potential, bring added value, improve performance, and boost competitiveness. Through this acquisition, Hidroelectrica consolidates its technological capacities and prepares to meet future industry challenges."
He further expressed confidence in the shared vision:
“We are sure that Hydro Equipment Manufacturing Plant Ltd. shares our vision, and we believe this transaction will positively impact the industry, bringing significant benefits to Hidroelectrica. We are committed to continuing the tradition of excellence established by UCM Resita S.A., the oldest industrial unit in our country, which has produced over 80% of the equipment installed in Hidroelectrica’s hydro plants. We understand the importance of this unit for the Resita community and aim to build a new successful chapter in the hydroenergy field together.”
Hidroelectrica remains Romania’s top producer of green energy, operating 187 hydroelectric plants with a total capacity of 6.3 GW. The company also owns the Crucea wind farm, with an installed capacity of 108 MW, and supplies essential technological services to the national energy system. Its portfolio covers approximately 600,000 consumer endpoints across the country, underscoring its critical role in Romania’s energy landscape.
This acquisition is expected to enhance Hidroelectrica’s operational efficiency, technological capabilities, and market position, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable growth and innovation in the renewable energy sector. The company’s strategic investments and ongoing expansion plans continue to position it as a leader in Romania’s green energy transition, ensuring it remains well-equipped to meet future energy challenges.
