Bucharest Stock Exchange: Hidroelectrica Surpasses €14.24 Billion Market Capitalization for the First Time

A ground breaking milestone was achieved today on the Bucharest Stock Exchange (BVB) as Hidroelectrica, Romania’s leading hydroelectric power producer, crossed the €14.24 billion market capitalization threshold for the first time in its history. At the opening of trading, the company’s market value soared to an unprecedented €14.28 billion, setting a new record for the BVB and highlighting the strong investor confidence in its strategic direction and growth prospects.

The remarkable growth in Hidroelectrica’s valuation is driven by a combination of strategic investments, operational excellence, and a clear vision for diversification and modernization. The company’s stock price surged from the start of the trading session, reaching a peak of approximately €31.77 around 10:36 am, which contributed to the overall market capitalization surpassing the €14.24 billion mark. By the end of the first hour of trading, the shares stabilized around €31.50, reflecting a market value of nearly €14.28 billion, a testament to the company’s robust performance and positive investor sentiment.

This historic leap in valuation comes after a period of impressive stock performance, with a year-to-date return of approximately 29%. This figure places Hidroelectrica among the top performers on the BET index, outperforming the index by nearly 10 percentage points. This sustained growth underscores the market’s recognition of the company’s strategic initiatives, operational efficiency, and future potential.

The company’s CEO, Bogdan Badea, expressed his satisfaction with the milestone, emphasizing that it reflects the market’s confidence in Hidroelectrica’s ongoing development efforts. “Reaching over €14.24 billion in market capitalization clearly shows that investors believe in the direction we’re heading. This achievement is the result of years of dedicated work—larger investments, continuation of ongoing projects, new initiatives, and a constant effort to make the company more efficient and better aligned with the realities of the energy sector,” Badea stated.

He further highlighted the company’s strategic focus on diversification and technological modernization. “We are committed to diversifying and hybridizing our portfolio by integrating production capacities with storage solutions and new technologies. Our future efforts will prioritize development, digitalization, and creating tangible value for shareholders, while contributing to a more stable and cleaner energy system in Romania,” Badea added.

In the recent past, specifically on April 15, 2026, Hidroelectrica’s stock approached the €13.78 billion market cap level, with its share price nearing approximately €30.66 but falling just short of crossing the threshold. However, on April 16, the momentum carried the share price beyond this mark from the very beginning of trading, illustrating strong investor enthusiasm and confidence.

The stock continued its upward trajectory throughout the morning, reaching the intra-day high of approximately €31.77, which translated into a total market capitalization exceeding €14.28 billion—an all-time high for the Bucharest Stock Exchange. This performance not only highlights the company’s financial strength but also underscores its strategic positioning as Romania’s largest producer of green energy.

Since the beginning of the year, Hidroelectrica’s stock has delivered a return of nearly 29%, making it the fifth-best performer on the BET index. This growth significantly outpaces the overall market, driven by the company’s robust investment plans, operational efficiencies, and strategic initiatives aimed at expanding renewable energy capacity.

In 2025, Hidroelectrica significantly increased its capital expenditures (CAPEX), reaching approximately €153 million (781 million lei), which underscores its commitment to continuous growth and modernization. Looking ahead, the company plans to maintain its ambitious investment trajectory in 2026, with detailed plans outlined in the upcoming annual budget, expected to be finalized and published at the end of April following shareholder approval.

Hidroelectrica has firmly established itself as Romania’s largest energy producer, with a 100% green energy portfolio. Over the past five years, it has maintained a market share of approximately 27%, and as of December 31, 2025, it held a dominant position in the national electricity market with a market share of 17.4% overall and 18.6% within the competitive segment.

The company manages an extensive portfolio of 188 hydroelectric plants with a total installed capacity exceeding 6.3 GW. This includes the Crucea Nord wind farm, with an installed capacity of 108 MW, scheduled to become operational in May-June 2026, and an innovative storage battery with a nominal power of 36 MW and a storage capacity of 72 MWh. These investments are part of Hidroelectrica’s strategy to diversify its renewable energy sources and enhance grid stability.

Hidroelectrica’s impressive valuation milestone not only reflects its operational and strategic success but also positions it as a key player in Romania’s energy transition. The company’s focus on digitalization, innovation, and sustainable growth aligns with national and EU ambitions for a greener, more resilient energy system.

Industry experts and market analysts view this achievement as a confirmation of Hidroelectrica’s leadership role in Romania’s energy landscape and its potential for continued growth. The company’s trajectory demonstrates that strategic investments, operational excellence, and stakeholder confidence can translate into remarkable market value and a solid foundation for future expansion.

In summary, the crossing of the €14.24 billion market capitalization threshold marks a historic moment not only for Hidroelectrica but also for the Bucharest Stock Exchange, symbolizing Romania’s increasing attractiveness as a destination for energy investments and the growing importance of renewable energy companies in the national economy. With a strong pipeline of projects and a clear strategic vision, Hidroelectrica is poised to continue its upward trajectory, contributing significantly to Romania’s energy independence, environmental sustainability, and economic development.
