European Parliament Votes Overwhelmingly to Support Geothermal Energy Strategy

In a groundbreaking move, the European Parliament's Plenary has voted in favor of a resolution to endorse a European geothermal energy strategy. Professor Krasnodębski MEP, leading the initiative from the European Conservatives & Reformist Group (ECR), received overwhelming support, with 96% of the 553 Members present casting their votes in favor.

The key provisions of the resolution include:

European Geothermal Energy Strategy: A call for the development of a comprehensive strategy to reduce administrative burdens and facilitate investments in buildings, industry, and agriculture across the Union.

Geothermal Industrial Alliance: Establishment of an alliance to expedite the adoption of best practices and the effective implementation of legislation in the geothermal sector.

Financial Risk Mitigation Scheme: Proposal for a harmonized insurance scheme to mitigate financial risks associated with geothermal projects.

National Strategies: Encouragement for Member States to design national strategies for geothermal energy, drawing inspiration from successful models in countries like France, Germany, Poland, Austria, Croatia, and Ireland.

Support for Transitioning Regions: Special emphasis on supporting regions in transition and coal-dependent regions in their transition to geothermal energy.

Philippe Dumas, Secretary General of the European Geothermal Energy Council, hailed the European Parliament's resounding endorsement, stating, "The European Commission cannot ignore such a powerful endorsement." He expressed gratitude to Professor Krasnodębski and his team for their commitment to making the energy transition accessible to everyone.

During the Plenary debate on 17 January, Commissioner for Justice Didier Reynders highlighted the remarkable consensus among political groups and stressed the role of geothermal district heating in providing affordable energy for cities.

Professor Krasnodębski MEP, delighted with the promotion campaign for geothermal energy, affirmed the significance of the debate and the report.

MEPs, including Pernille Weiss, Ville Niinistö, and others, emphasized the need for a strategic approach with practical tools to promote geothermal energy as a crucial component of Europe's sustainable future.

The support for geothermal energy extended beyond the parliamentary floor, with various MEPs highlighting its potential for just transitions, job retraining, and its role in enhancing Europe's energy security.

As the momentum for geothermal energy gains traction, the call for a united European strategy becomes more pronounced. The Commission is urged to take a leadership role in elevating the prominence of geothermal energy across the continent.
