Romanian energy producer Hidroelectrica reported a strong financial and operational performance in the first six months of 2026, with revenue and profitability significantly higher than in the same period last year, supported by normalized hydrological conditions and the growing contribution of its electricity supply business.
According to the company's first-half report, operating profit rose by 65% year-on-year to RON 2.89 billion (€568 million), while revenue increased by 40% to RON 6.05 billion (€1.19 billion). Earnings per share climbed 62%, reaching RON 5.72, compared with RON 3.53 in the first half of 2025.
Hidroelectrica said its revenue growth reflected both improved hydrological conditions and a changing revenue mix, with the electricity supply segment accounting for an increasingly important share of the group's business.
The company reported an operating margin of 48% and a net margin of 43%, highlighting the continued advantage provided by its relatively low-cost hydropower generation. At the same time, increased exposure to the wholesale electricity market and the expansion of the supply business influenced overall margins.
Electricity production jumps 17%
Hidroelectrica's net electricity production reached 7,070 GWh in the first six months of 2026, up 17% from the same period a year earlier.
Hydropower generation accounted for 6,939 GWh, also an increase of 17%, while wind power generation reached 130 GWh, up 2%.
The company attributed the significant increase primarily to improved hydrological conditions during the first quarter. The average Danube flow was 13% higher than in the first quarter of 2025, resulting in a return to more normal levels of water availability.
Electricity purchases also increased, reaching 983 GWh, up 46% year-on-year. Total electricity sales amounted to 8,052 GWh, representing a 19% increase.
Supply business expands rapidly
Hidroelectrica's electricity supply portfolio continued to grow at a rapid pace. As of June 30, 2026, the company had 1,399,735 consumption points, an 83% increase from the 766,256 recorded a year earlier.
The increase of more than 633,000 consumption points reflects both a significant influx of new residential customers and strong expansion in the non-residential segment, according to the company.
In March 2026, based on the latest monthly data available from Romania's energy regulator ANRE, Hidroelectrica held a 19.22% market share in the competitive electricity supply segment and 17.95% across the overall electricity supply market. The company ranked first in both categories at the time of the report.
Romania's largest renewable power producer
Hidroelectrica had 3,532 employees at the end of June, up 1% year-on-year, while the group as a whole employed 5,192 people.
The company is Romania's largest electricity producer, operating a portfolio based entirely on renewable energy. It is also the country's largest electricity supplier by market share and the main provider of technological services required to maintain the operation of Romania's national power system.
The strong first-half performance marks a significant improvement compared with 2025 and underlines Hidroelectrica's ability to benefit from more favorable hydrological conditions while continuing to expand its position in Romania's highly competitive electricity supply market.
