A total of 128 pedestrian crossings on county roads in Romania’s Brăila County have been equipped with dedicated LED lighting systems powered exclusively by autonomous photovoltaic installations, in a project described as a national first in the field.
The investment was fully financed from the own budget of the Brăila County Council and was carried out in partnership with Flash Lighting Services S.A. The project aims to improve pedestrian safety and visibility at crossing points, according to a press release.
The initiative was implemented across 34 communes in Brăila County, bringing dedicated lighting to 128 pedestrian crossings located on county roads.
The new systems use LED light sources with controlled light distribution, directing illumination specifically toward the pedestrian crossing area. According to the County Council, the solution is designed to improve visibility without simply adding more lighting to the existing road infrastructure.
A key feature of the project is the use of stand-alone photovoltaic systems. Each installation operates independently and is not connected to the electricity grid.
As a result, the 128 pedestrian crossings require zero electricity consumption from the public power grid for their dedicated lighting systems. The autonomous configuration also eliminates the need for additional works to extend or modify existing electricity distribution networks.
Beyond improving road safety, the project is expected to reduce operating costs associated with electricity consumption and limit the infrastructure work required to provide dedicated lighting at pedestrian crossings.
According to the press release, the scale of the investment and the technical solution adopted make the project a national first for dedicated lighting systems at pedestrian crossings on county roads.
