Derek Chollet reiterates US support for continued investment in developing nuclear power generation capacity in Romania

 


Minister of Energy Virgil Popescu had a working meeting on 9 february 2022 with Derek Chollet, an adviser to the United States Department of State, an official with the rank of Undersecretary of State, who was visiting Romania.

"We talked about the future investments in the nuclear field, those from Nuclearelectrica, but also about the small modular reactors (SMR) in Romania. During the strategic partnership between the two states, which also aims to strengthen energy security, we also talked about the need to diversify energy resources, which includes investments in offshore wind energy production in the Black Sea. The possibility of supplying liquefied natural gas from the USA for the Romanian market was also discussed. The US side also highlighted the issue of security of energy supply in the context of the current tensions between Russia and Ukraine, as well as the recent situation generated by rising energy prices. Derek Chollet reiterated US support for continued investment in the development of nuclear power generation capacity in Romania, in order to increase energy security in the region. The meeting was also attended by David Muniz, Chargé d'Affaires of the US Embassy in Bucharest, and by the Ministry of Energy Dan Dragan and George Niculescu, Secretaries of State, as well as Diana Codău, Director of the Directorate of European Affairs and International Relations, "said Virgil Popescu Minister of Energy.
